Annex A11: Comparison of Door-to-Door Travelling Times

a) Passenger transportation

1. car: Driving to the motorway 5 km, average 40 km/h Similar from motorway to final destination. On the motorway: 115 km/h average.

2. Transrapid or Swissmetro: Leave house 35 min before train dep., reach house 25 min after arrival. Trip: Average 310 km/h plus 2 min for acceleration and braking plus 4 min each 150 km for intermediate stop.

3. Air: Leave house 70 min before depa, reach hourturese 40 min after landing. Flight: average 700 km/h plus 15 min for start and landing. Flight distance 15 % shorter than with other means of transportation.

4. AUTOSHUTTLE: Driving to motorway: 5 km, average 40 km/h, then 2 min losses during entering a cabin. From Autoshuttle to final dest. 5 km, average 40 km/h. Autoshuttle journey: average 180 km/h plus 1 min for acceleration and braking. Additionally 1 min each 150 km for line change

Up to a door-to-door-distance of 28 km the car is the fastest means of transportation. From 28 km door-to-door-distance, out of which 18 km are AUTOSHUTTLE-transportation, up to ca. 400 km AUTOSHUTTLE is fastest. Above this the aircraft is the fastest. Transrapid is only at 400 km approximately as fast as AUTOSHUTTLE and aircraft. Car and AUTOSHUTTLE users have the advantage of not being dependent on timetables.

b) Goods transportation

1. lorry: Driving to the motorway: 5 km with average 35 km/h Similar from the motorway to the final destination. On the motorway: average 70 km/h.

2. rail-truck train: Leave house: 120 min before dept, reach house 40 min after arrival. Journey in the train: average 85 km/h plus 4 min for acceleration and braking plus 10 min each 150 km for intermed. stop

3. aircraft: Leave house 120 min before dept., reach house 60 min after landing. Flight: average 700 km/h plus 15 min for start and landing. Flight distance 15 % shorter than with other means of transportation.

4. AUTOSHUTTLE: Driving to AUTOSHUTTLE: 5 km, average 35 km/h, then 5 min losses during loading. From AUTOSHUTTLE to final dest. 5 km, average 35 km/h. AUTOSHUTTLE journey: average 180 km/h plus 1 min for acceleration and braking. Additionally 3 min each 150 km for line change.

Up to a door-to-door-distance of 22 km the lorry is the fastest means of transportation. From 22 km door-to-door-distance, out of which 12 km are AUTOSHUTTLE-transportation, up to ca. 670 km AUTOSHUTTLE is the fastest. Above this the aircraft is the fastest. A railway truck-train never is the fastest. Lorry and AUTOSHUTTLE users have the advantage of not being dependent on timetables.
